Join the Blairstown Chapter of “Quilting for a Cause NJ”

Anyone can learn how to quilt for a cause. All it takes is a little heart!

The Blairstown Chapter of "Quilting for a Cause NJ" is actively seeking volunteers to join their community effort in crafting hand-sewn quilts for the homeless and others in need. Founded by Rose Phalon, this organization embodies the spirit of giving without expecting anything in return. At the February BEC General meeting, Rose and her husband Joe emphasized their search for local volunteers and a suitable meeting space in the Blairstown area. Ideal candidates are those eager to learn and are passionate about making a difference. No prior experience is necessary.

The Blairstown Chapter of Quilting for a Cause NJ will soon be meeting on the first Wednesday of the month. For those interested in joining or learning more visit www.QuiltingforaCauseNJ.org or search for the group on Facebook.

At the Start

Originating in the Phalons' living room in 2017 during the Martin Luther King, Jr., National Day of Service, the organization has since expanded significantly. Over the past seven years, Rose and her dedicated volunteers have created and distributed more than 9,000 quilts to homeless individuals across all 50 states and six additional countries, an achievement that if laid end to end, would stretch approximately 10 miles! The organization has also extended its reach to assist victims of natural disasters, including Hurricane Harvey and the 2018 Hawaiian eruptions.

Quilting for a Cause operates on a volunteer and donation basis, ensuring that each quilt is a true gift, free of any obligations. The group's core mission is to offer comfort to those in need, a testament to the impact that "a pile of thread and some fabric" can have, as Rose puts it.

Regional meetings take place at the Pequannock Senior House in Pompton Plains, NJ, including an annual 12-hour Sew-a-Thon to celebrate the group's anniversary. However, weekly gatherings are shorter and cater to a range of participation levels. New volunteers need not be experts in sewing or quilting, as the process accommodates various skills and contributions.

A Rewarding Activity for All

Rose and Joe highlight the rewarding experience of volunteering, noting the positive feedback from participants, especially during the challenging times of the pandemic. The group is open to everyone, offering a no-pressure invitation to contribute to their cause, even from the comfort of their own home.
