Originally Blairstown’s Main Street Livery, the concrete structure at 30 Main Street was fashioned into a movie theatre and community hall in 1913 by early film exhibitors, Robert Roy and Raymond Smith. Dubbed Roy’s Theatre, the building opened on April 2, 1913 and began screening silent movies twice a week. A spectacular fire on February 7, 1917 caused major damage to the theatre and destroyed five apartments adjacent to the structure. Rebuilt and modernized, Roy’s Hall reopened on July 14, 1917 and continued to show silent movies until 1930, when it was converted to “talkies.” Although the theatre survived the devastating flood of 1955 when much of Main Street was under water, the heavy competition from television was too great an adversary. Roy’s Hall was forced to close its doors on November 2, 1961.

Today Roy’s Hall is operated by Blairstown Live-Arts, Inc., a NJ non-profit cultural institution (501(c)(3) application pending) with the goal of promoting a broad appreciation of the interplay between culture and artistic expression. It does this by acting as a forum for artists who best exemplify world traditions, reflect contemporary trends and explore artistic frontiers, and by nurturing the artistic and cultural life of its own community in and around the Skylands region of New Jersey.

Local Artists

Contrary to popular belief, there are many artistic cities and towns aside from the requisite stops of New York and Los Angeles. Fortunately for our local residents and visitors, the art scene within Blairstown’s Historic District is as diverse as the vibrant landscape which surrounds the area. For the past fifteen-years, the district has steadily evolved into a haven for aspiring artists. From an impressive cooperative housing works of 30+ local artists to quaint shops filled with one-of-a-kind finds, up-cycled art and unique gifts, patrons and art enthusiasts of all tastes discover a feast for the senses in Blairstown.

Shoppers and art admirers alike will delight in well displayed, hand-crafted items; including oil paintings, watercolor paintings, photography, ceramics, stained glass, pottery, fiber art, wood-turning, jewelry, mixed-media, collage, diorama, quilting and several other types of creative expression. A trip to the Greater Blairstown area is not complete unless you visit this hidden emerging gem.

The Blairstown Museum is a private, non-profit organization organized under New Jersey law. Managed by a Board of Directors, the museum is housed in a 19th century building, known as the last remaining structure of “Roy’s Row”. The building is currently owned by Panberry Properties. The Museum is the only general history and cultural museum for the Township of Blairstown. It cares for over 2,000 items that illustrate the history of the township and its inhabitants. It uses the collection to interpret Blairstown history through permanent and changing exhibits and to educate the public about Blairstown history through programs, resource materials and events. The Museum helps foster heritage tourism throughout the region.

Blairstown Museum staff members are charged with providing professional care to the collection, employing standards established by the American Association of Museums for the storage, care and exhibit of artifacts in its custody. Museum collections are on display on a rotating basis throughout the year. More of the collection is available on their website by accessing the “Exhibit” menu tab. The Museum is committed to expanding the digital display of the collection, in a manner that makes it available as a teaching tool for students, teachers and historians.
